Life Issues

This is an interesting article on lifenews.com about a med student who witnesses an abortion and changes his pro-choice stance to pro-life. It is a bit graphic so you make the choice to read it or not.

Some time ago, I was sent this testimony from a medical student who preferred not to leave a name. He had just witnessed an abortion as part of his training. Deeply troubled, he wanted to tell someone. He was haunted by what he had seen.

COME THOU FOUNT

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Sorrowing I shall be in spirit,
Till released from flesh and sin,
Yet from what I do inherit,
Here Thy praises I’ll begin;
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood;
How His kindness yet pursues me
Mortal tongue can never tell,
Clothed in flesh, till death shall loose me
I cannot proclaim it well.

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

O that day when freed from sinning,
I shall see Thy lovely face;
Clothed then in blood washed linen
How I’ll sing Thy sovereign grace;
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry,
Take my ransomed soul away;
Send thine angels now to carry
Me to realms of endless day.

This post has to do with our financial blessings. Money can be an element in so many problems in relationships – with self, God and others. So we at Eden would like to present articles from time to time regarding growth in holiness through the financial blessings God has bestowed upon each of us. We are not talking about extra wealth or abundance. St. Paul says in 1st Corinthians 4:7, “Name something you have that you have not received.” In other words everything is a gift – even if it’s just a few pennies. So these articles will be stories of blessings and how we use God’s financial gifts for our growth in holiness and other’s growth in holiness.

The following is an article on Cruxnow website dealing with consumerism

Pope Francis’ critique of unfettered capitalism and trickle-down economics has unsettled many Catholics who identify as Republicans and proponents of the free market — though more so among political and media elites than conservatives in the pews, who overwhelmingly support the Holy Father. Some have simply ignored Francis’ message, as they did when Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II offered similar critiques. Others have argued that Francis does not understand American capitalism. His fiercest critics have charged him with being a left-wing ideologue and a Marxist. (full article)

Partner with us in touching minds and hearts with the intimate love of God. You can do that in two ways. FIRSTLY: you can share with us your stories of the way the Lord has touched your life with his love and grace. Here at Eden, we believe evangelization is first and foremost the sharing of stories. Stories that touch hearts and minds are vehicles of God’s love and grace. Others are touched by reading of how you have been touched. We will share your stories with others through our web site. Email us at edonofky@gmail.com. SECONDLY: the Eden Foundation is a public charity foundation relying solely on your generous donations. Some day we hope to have enough funding to provide grant money to other non-profits that pursue evangelization efforts through technology such as this web site. At the moment, our costs are mainly administrative. But we need your help to maintain and grow. If you are touched by our efforts, help us with a contribution. You can donate through this site by clicking on the button in the menu above. We are a 501(c)3 organization designated so by the IRS and we will provide a copy of this designation upon request (PDF format). All donations are tax deductible. Thank you for partnering with us and may you be touched in a powerful way today with the intimate love of the Lord.

East To West

By Casting Crowns

Here I am lord and I’m drowning
In your sea of forgetfulness
The chains of yesterday surround me
I yearn for peace and rest
I don’t want to end up where you found me
And it echoes in my mind
Keeps me awake tonight

I know you’ve cast my sin as far
As the east is from the west
And I stand before you now

Mission Minded

This post will mainly focus on the Joshua Mission of Hope Foundation which is based in the United States but serves the community of Salagnac, Haiti. Marie Gray, a good friend of mine, wrote the following information about the school she started in Salagnac and which the foundation she formed supports. We hope to soon have a video witness by Marie along with pictures of the children. Being “mission-minded” means to be concerned about all our brothers and sisters around the world, especially the poorest of the poor.

JOSHUA’S MISSION OF HOPE

Joshua’s Mission of Hope, Inc. is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for children living in Salagnac, Haiti.  We will accomplish this by operating an elementary school, as well as other programs and services designed to improve living conditions in the local community. Through our organization’s programs, we hope to increase opportunities for those living in our targeted community while improving the region’s overall quality of life.

The primary program focus of our organization is the operation of our school which is called Ecole Gabriel Academie De Salagnac. This school is currently providing educational opportunities for preschool, kindergarten, and school-aged children. We are currently operating programs for children through 4th grade, with a total of 225 students. We will continue to add one grade level each year until we get to sixth grade. We hope to expand eventually to the high school level.

In addition to operating the school, we are offering an after school program for 60 elementary school students called “Les Enfants de la Nativite.” The program includes tutoring services, providing books, and social activities. We offer free meals daily for the students and staff. The children’s school tuition and meals are paid for the entire year. The teachers receive a monthly stipend. We plan on expanding the program to accommodate more students in need. The program has been very successful. The parents volunteer their service as their way of giving back to the community.

(Editor’s note: there is no electricity in the school or in the community of Salagnac.)

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I’m found
Was blind but now I see so clearly

(Chorus:)

Hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me
Hallelujah, all my stains are washed away, washed away

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

(Chorus:)

When we’ve been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We’ve no less days to sing Your praise
Than when we first begun

Our Holy Father

In this week’s audience, the Holy Father speaks on poverty.

Dear Brothers and Sisters:     Today we consider one of the conditions which afflict too many families, namely, poverty.  And yet, in the worst of circumstances, even in war torn areas, how often these families persevere with dignity, entrusting themselves to the goodness of God.  It is a miracle that even in extreme situations families continue to be formed and sustained.  Sadly, our modern economies often promote individual wellbeing at the expense of the family.  As Christians, however, we must always look for ways to strengthen and support families, especially poorer ones.  The Church, as a mother, can never be blind to the sufferings of her children.  For each of us, this means choosing simplicity both individually and in our institutions, so as to break down walls of division and overcome all difficulties, especially poverty.  (Complete text)

One of the great movies of recent date is Amazing Grace. It is several years old and can be found to rent or buy. It is the true story of the abolition of slavery in Britain. Below is one of the trailers.

IN CHRIST ALONE

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless Babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save

Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live, I live

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again

And as He stands in victory
Sins curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From a lifes first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny

No power of hell, no scheme of man
Could ever pluck me from His hand
Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I stand

I will stand, I will stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground, all other ground
Is sinking sand, is sinking sand
So I stand

Parables in Parenting

by CAITLIN MARCHAND

Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.

  • These lines always seemed particularly beautiful to me, even as a child.  They are so intimate, so feminine.  When I became a mother myself they became even more powerful because they reveal the heart of a mother, pondering the mystery of her child, her heart welling with love.  Of course, when the Blessed Mother considered her child she was also contemplating her God.  Yet, I think every mother learns new things about the Father’s relationship to his children through her relationship to her own.
  • Here are a few things I have learned about God’s love as I ponder my children.   (Full article)

Chivalry

Father’s Day is coming up. I thought this was a great article for all dads to read.

My three places of residence — my home, my office, and my mind — were free of clutter and arranged so as to allow me both to make the most of my days and to begin to venture out into intellectual life.  Then I became a father.

There Is A Fountain

By Selah

There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel’s veins
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains

Lose all their guilty stains
Lose all their guilty stains
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains
The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day

Mission Mindedness

This is a continuation of the information about the school in Salagnac, Haiti; the story that was begun last week under this post.

“Currently, we are running our school with a staff consisting of nine teachers, three teacher’s aides, an Administrator, a dean, a program director, and a receptionist. We also have three cooks and a helper who prepare meals that are served to the students and staff members. As we add more grade levels. We will be hiring additional teachers as needed. All of the individuals working with our children and providing instructions are certified in elementary school education. We also require them to complete an internal teacher training program prior to starting the job. We will fund required annual continuing education training program for the instructors.

The academic programs that are offered are available to any child who lives in the area at no charge. Initially, the goal was to have one class of 30 students for each grade level, which we have already reached. However, in the future an additional classroom will be added for each grade to accommodate the long waiting list. The primary focus of our school is to provide opportunities to those children who otherwise would not be able to attend school. We will then be filling all additional spaces on a first come, first served basis.

We are providing school supplies and all other necessary equipment for the children to be successful. The parents are responsible for the school uniforms; however, we do provide uniforms to the children whose parents cannot afford them. Every day our students receive a healthy and nutritious lunch. Beginning 2013-2014 school year, breakfast will be provided. We also celebrate birthdays of students and teachers each month by holding one big birthday party. This has become very popular since for most, it’s the first time they are learning of when they were born.”

(Editor’s note: the meal the school provides is sometimes the only meal of the day that the children receive. And the teachers are provided only $100 a month as compensation.)
